You must be currently serving or have previously served as a permanent GS-12 with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and are currently serving or have served in the 1895 series within the last five years to qualify under this Bulletin. If you hold or have previously held the GS-1895-13 level or higher and are willing to take a change to lower grade, you will also be considered for this position. Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise to address anti-terrorism and border security enforcement activities. This position starts at a salary of $76,721.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $99,741.00 (GS-12, Step 10) with promotion potential to $99,741 (GS-12, Step 10). In this CBP Officer (Enforcement) position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals detecting and preventing terrorists and instruments of terror from entering the U.S. Typical work assignments include:
Performing the full range of inspection, intelligence analysis, examination, and law enforcement activities relating to arrival and departure of persons, conveyances, and merchandise at ports of entry. Conducting investigations of alleged violations of criminal laws pertaining to smuggling of instruments of terror, aliens, people smuggling, controlled substances, and other contraband, and investigating falsification of official documents in furtherance of criminal activities. Preparing and presenting evidence to the U.S. Attorney, State Attorney or local courts for determination of cases for criminal prosecution in courts. Planning strategies to accomplish organizational and law enforcement goals or targets, and determines tactics to achieve intermediate objectives.
Experience:
You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you are currently serving or have served as a full-time permanent GS-12 with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and are currently serving or have served in the 1895 series within the last five years. Your experience must demonstrate responsibility in performing the full range of CBP Officer duties such as:
Applying a comprehensive range of Federal laws, rules, regulations, and procedures relating to inspection, inspection-related investigations, and compliance activities governing the admission of travelers or the import/export of cargo in and out of the United States Collecting, preparing, and reviewing evidence and documentation, arranging for forensic examination, requesting records and certification from other agencies, taking statements from potential defendants and witnesses Identifying, apprehending, verifying, detaining, and paroling for prosecution, individuals with active warrants for arrest, as identified through the inspection process; working closely with other law enforcement agencies on the delivery and turning over those wanted individuals Using judgment and resourcefulness to select, adapt, and apply new principles and practices to situations where existing guidance or precedents are not applicable Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Provisions of Public Law 93-350 and 100-238 allow the imposition of a maximum age for initial appointment to a CBPO (Enforcement) position with the Department of Homeland Security. Candidates must be less than 37 years of age at the closing date of this announcement. Creditable service covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c), Title 5 U.S.C 8412(d) or creditable service on or after July 6, 2008 covered by Public Law 110-161 may be applied toward the maximum age requirement. This age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving in a federal civilian (not military) law enforcement position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d). NOTE:
The Commissioner of CBP has approved a temporary increase in the maximum allowable age for original placement into a CBPO position; therefore, candidates must be referred for selection before reaching their 40th birthday. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
